Narrative Structure
Typically, changing someone’s perception
or behavior is difficult. People like to stay
in their comfort zone. Barking at someone
and demanding they alter their approach
and thinking never works. Methodologie takes
our inherent desire for stories and narrative
and uses this to persuade us to change. The
concept of storytelling is raised repeatedly in
their conversations and philosophy. “Does the
size tell the story well? Is the pacing helpful
for the narrative? Does the content reinforce
the story?” are common questions asked in
a Methodologie creative discussion.
A publication is designed with the goal of
communicating the client’s message clearly
and within the context of a story. The size,
format, and length of the publication will be
determined not by a preset expectation, but
by the space required for appropriate flow
and storytelling. DeDonato explains, “Size
and format are driven by determining the
desired impact of the project and by taking
the audience needs into account. Unusual
sizes and formats can capture more attention
than one that is expected, but in the end,
we consider issues of sustainability and
appropriateness of production values.
Sustainability has become an increasingly
higher priority for Methodologie and its clients.
In addition to finding ways to minimize the
negative environmental impact of a printed
piece, they also look for options that utilize
online or digital communications. DeDonato
says, “Our clients are as concerned about the
environmental impact of their actions as we
are of ours.” A commitment to sustainable
