John Bruno had established himself as an animator, layout artist, and story director when he saw George Lucas’ original Star Wars in 1977. “I thought, ‘Man, what do I have to do to do realistic effects like that? The simplest thing like the lightsabers were just such a visual treat and I didn’t know how they were done.” Still pondering a career in visual effects, Bruno met effects supervisor Richard Edlund while working on Heavy Metal in Montreal.
