Before Karen Goulekas became a visual-effects artist and then a supervisor on films such as Godzilla, The Day After Tomorrow, 10,000 BC, and Green Lantern, she had not considered a career as an artist, and instead pursued journalism. “I can’t draw to save my life,” she admits. “The last time I took an art course I spent a lot of time doing a pen-and-ink drawing in the 8th grade and when I turned it in I got a D. I was told ‘stick with writing.’”
