GALAN PANG

“There are many cool artists in the world, and you can

learn a lot from them. But don’t forget to practice your

skills in both digital and traditional ways. Also, don’t

just look at the Internet. Go to the museum and look

at real oil paintings and sculpture.”

Galan Pang has spent ten years working in the computer

gaming industry. He has wide-ranging experience as

a matte painter, conceptual artist, and special effects

supervisor. Pang has worked for a high-prole computer

graphic studio in Hong Kong, Menfond Electronic Art

and Computer Design Co. Ltd., as head of the creative

and visual department. A senior concept artist, he

currently works for CCP Asia in Shanghai.

Beginning as a special effects animator in 1999, Pang

worked on several gaming projects, providing cinematic

effects for Final Fantasy IX and X. Next, he moved into

creative and visual direction.

The artist enjoys creating science ction art. “I think that

it’s very interesting—and challenging—to create your own

world,” Pang notes. “As a science ction artist, I can put

all my imagination into my works, whether it’s a vehicle I

invent or a creature I create that doesn’t exist anywhere.”

“Young artists should keep practicing and looking at

other people’s work,” Pang advises. “There are many cool

artists in the world, and you can learn a lot from them.

But don’t forget to practice your skills in both digital and

traditional ways. Also, don’t just look at the Internet. Go to

the museum and look at real oil paintings and sculpture.”

“Everything in the world gives me inspiration,” he says.

“Sometimes I get inspired by random shapes and lines,

or leaves, or the shape of a cloud, or I may reference an

insect when I want to design a hostile galactic spaceship.

Whatever I design, it must have a reference to real-world

objects. This increases its believability.”

Pang has been featured as a sci- characters digital artist

in Advanced Photoshop Magazine Issue 60, giving tips

and techniques on science ction character painting in

Adobe Photoshop. He has also given a digital painting

workshop in Digital Painter 2009 (inRage Publishing).

His work has also appeared in Ballistic Publishing’s

Expose and Exotique annuals.

Robot Lovers. Photoshop. Birth. Photoshop. This concept painting was created for a challenge held by

ImagineFX forum. The topic was a tribute to H. R. Giger. “This was very inter-

esting—and very challenging—to create a horrific scene based on the style

of Giger,” says Pang. “I developed this painting showing a mother alien giving

birth to her child, concentrating on the sense of pain and disgust.”
