CHAPTER 7

Motion of Planets and Satellites

Celestial bodies in the universe are bound together due to the famous gravitational force, given by Sir Issac Newton, among them. The gravitational force is a conservative force and is an example of the central force. Under the gravitational force, planets revolve around the Sun, for example, the Earth revolves around the Sun, and satellites revolve around their respective planets, for example, the Moon revolves around the Earth. In this chapter, we have discussed about the central force, two-body system, Newton’s law of gravitation, gravitational field, gravitational potential, artificial satellites, geostationary satellites, and global position system.
