11.1. Introduction

The study and design of a control system includes various steps such as modelling, simulation, analysis and optimization. System models are developed by applying fundamental physical laws namely Kirchhoff’s current law, Kirchhoff’s voltage law, Newton’s Laws, laws of thermo-dynamics, etc. These laws may lead to linear, non-linear, ordinary differential, partial differential or difference equations. The response of a control system is studied by subjecting the model to standard input signals. If the response is unsatisfactory, system is improved and optimized by adjustment of system parameters or incorporating suitable compensation devices.
