This chapter describes the issues surrounding data collection at each of the levels. The previous chapter focused on the specific methods of data collection. This chapter explores issues about the measurement at each level, describing why it is important, the methods that are most useful, some of the data that must be collected, and the sources of the data. When combined with the previous chapter, these two chapters provide the essentials for collecting all of the data needed through Level 4.
Sources of Data
When considering the possible data sources for collecting data in a consulting project, the categories are easily defined. Here are the major categories of stakeholders.
Client/Senior Managers
One of the most useful data sources for ROI analysis is the client group, usually a senior management team. Whether an individual or a group, the client's perception and understanding is critical to project success. Clients can provide input on all types of issues and are usually available and willing to offer feedback. Collecting data from this source is preferred, because the data usually reflect what is necessary to make adjustments and measure success.
Consulting Participants
