As a component in an Exchange Server 2010 design, the Edge Transport role functions as a first port of call for inbound messages and a departure point for outbound messages. You primarily use this server role for the purpose of message sanitation. Message sanitation includes everything from ensuring that incoming spam doesn’t reach user mailboxes to ensuring that sensitive information isn’t transmitted to external third parties through email.
