Objective 2.6: Deploy Server Roles for Coexistence and Migration

When you discuss upgrading to Exchange Server 2010 from Exchange 2003 or Exchange 2007, it is important to remember that you don’t actually upgrade a specific server, but that the upgrade is performed on the organization. You introduce new servers running the new version of Exchange to the existing organization, rather than (for example) directly upgrading an Exchange 2007 mailbox server so that it runs Exchange 2010. When you see the word migration in relation to Exchange, this means shifting to an entirely new organization with a new Active Directory forest, rather than introducing new servers into your existing Active Directory forest and moving data across to those servers.
