9.2. Disks
When configuring fault tolerance for a server, you will often consider fault tolerance on your disks first. Fault tolerance on disks comes in the form of Redundant Array of Independent Disks (or Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks), or RAID.
When deciding on RAID, one of the first decisions you'll face is whether to use software RAID or hardware RAID:
Software RAID
Software RAID is supported by the operating system only. Windows Server 2008 supports RAID-0, RAID-1, and RAID-5. However, you must first convert your disks to dynamic disks to support RAID configurations. When you install Windows Server 2008, your disks will be basic. You can convert them using Disk Management.
