4.2. SharePoint Site Templates

In previous versions of SharePoint, if you wanted to create a site for a specific purpose, you had to take a basic template and heavily modify it to have it serve your needs. MOSS 2007 ships with a series of default site templates you have access to out of the box. Although you can modify any default template so that it meets your requirements, very often you won't have to do so.
