Engineering Dynamics

3.1 Engineering dynamics

As stated at the beginning of Chapter 2, engineering mechanics can be divided into statics and dynamics. Chapter 3 is concerned with dynamics which is the study of objectsin motion.

3.2 Work

When a force is applied to a body so that it causes the body to move, the force is said to be doing work. The work done is the product of the distance moved in metres (m) and the applied force in newtons (N) measured in the direction of motion. Therefore the work done is measured in newton metres and the unit of work is joule (J) where 1 Nm = 1 J.
