14.1 Stresses in Thick Cylinders
Thin cylinders and stresses in thin cylinders were the subject of discussion in chapter 5. It was pointed out there that a cylinder can be regarded as thin if its thickness does not exceed one twentieth of its internal diameter. For thickness of a thin cylinder it was quite reasonable to assume that the hoop or tangential stress remained constant over the thickness. However, in case of a thick cylinder such an assumption is not correct. Practical observations have shown that the hoop stress measured on the surface of a thick cylinder (whose thickness is greater than 1/20 of its inner diameter), is smaller than that calculated by thin cylinder formula or method.
