Let us consider one-dimensional motion of a particle of mass m along the X axis. P and Q are two neighbouring points on the axis located at coordinates x and x + δx and lying on the path of the particle as it moves under the action of a (variable) force F (Fig. 8.1). We shall write Newton's 2nd law in a slightly different way.
