Chapter two

Sensors and transducers

Objectives

The objectives of this chapter are that, after studying it, the reader should be able to:

  • Describe the performance of commonly used sensors using terms such as range, span, error, accuracy, sensitivity, hysteresis and non-linearity error, repeatability, stability, dead band, resolution, output impedance, response time, time constant, rise time and settling time.
  • Evaluate sensors used in the measurement of displacement, position and proximity, velocity and motion, force, fluid pressure, liquid flow, liquid level, temperature, and light intensity.
  • Explain the problem of bouncing when mechanical switches are used for inputting data and how it might be overcome.
