Video Acquisition
3.1 Introduction
This chapter presents various aspects of video acquisition that are relevant with regards to the concept of format-agnostic media production. As outlined in Chapter 2, the aim of future media production is to offer the largest possible set of video sensors with the most suitable acquisition capability along various dimensions of a video signal. Most importantly:
- spatial resolution ranging from HD (high definition), via 8k resolution towards ultra-high resolution panoramic video;
- various frame rates ranging from 24/25 frames per second (fps) up to 400 fps; and
- dynamic range from 8 bit per channel up to 16 bit per channel.
Depending on creative aspects at the production side or individual desires by the end user, dedicated facets of visual representation of a scene might be of interest. On the production side, the aim is to capture images with a contrast range chosen to suit the important features in the scene, which can be particularly challenging in scenes containing a large contrast range.
