1 Introduction – empowerment through technology?

In February 2012, Mozilla announced its plans to translate the popular web browser Firefox into Quechua, a South American language (with about 10 million speakers).164 The initiative is linked to runasimipi.org, a collaborative project which aims to create open software in Quechua.
