Case Study
Some of the topics discussed in Part III of this book are reviewed in this chapter by means of a case study. The disk drive selected for this case study is the Hitachi Global Storage Technologies Deskstar 7K500. At the time of the writing of this book, this drive was state of the art with an industry leading capacity of 500 GB. Contrasted to the first disk drive IBM RAMAC 350 which had a capacity of 5 MB, this is an increase of 100,000 fold; all that in a package which is smaller by roughly the same order of magnitude. It is a 3.5” form factor drive targeted for desktop machines and entry servers for IT applications, as well as for personal video recorder and gaming applications in the consumer electronics market.
