Quantifying sustainability: industrial ecology, materials flow and life cycle analysis

Abstract:
This chapter introduces the field of industrial ecology, including an exploration of its main tool, life cycle analysis (LCA), and discusses how it relates to metropolitan sustainability. The chapter first goes through a brief history of the development of LCA, then runs through some examples of its application to urban sustainability measurement. It also briefly touches on other tools such as materials flow analysis and concludes with an applied example of LCA and a discussion of its benefits and drawbacks.
