Urban agriculture: opportunities and constraints

Abstract:
This chapter addresses the burgeoning field of urban agriculture, with a focus on developments in the USA. Urban agriculture is described in the context of changing approaches to sustainable urban development. The chapter includes quantitative discussions of the capacity of urban agriculture to feed urban populations as well as its role in providing ecosystem services to cities in the form of stormwater management, energy use reduction and waste mitigation.
