Solar energy in the built environment: powering the sustainable city
G. Kiss, Kiss + Cathcart, Architects, USA
Abstract:
The relationship between the sun and built form is an essential determinant of the nature of a city. Solar energy affects the design of sustainable cities in a number of ways, from the establishment of urban form to the design of buildings in terms of orientation, glazing and shading devices, and the incorporation of active devices such as photovoltaic and solar thermal panels. Urban solar strategies should vary significantly according to climate and latitude. There is great potential for solar inputs to shape urban form and to supply a significant portion of urban energy use.
