Wind energy in the built environment

Abstract:

As cities seek to address the environmental impact of existing energy supplies, many are looking to wind energy as a potential alternative. This chapter examines the characteristics of wind in cities and the potential for urban wind energy development. It describes different wind energy technologies, including both large and small turbines, and considers their suitability for urban areas. The chapter addresses key issues for the viability of urban wind power projects and concludes with a review of the various impacts of wind project development including safety, visual, aural and environmental, among others.
