Planning for more sustainable urban development
S.M. Wheeler, University of California, Davis, USA
Abstract:
As the activity that formulates and seeks to achieve community goals, planning is crucially important in order to bring about more sustainable metropolitan regions. Urban planning directs the physical development of cities, coordinates transportation systems and other infrastructure, and seeks to promote economic, environmental and social welfare. In recent years, cities have sought to integrate sustainability goals into their planning. Although such efforts are still in the early stages, planning offers a path toward a more sustainable metropolitan future.
