Our contemporary view of the cell membrane pictures a highly dynamic structure endowed with a rich functional repertoire. This chapter describes the evolution of our understanding of membrane structure and function, and introduces the notion of ‘cell membrane emergence’ as a robust conceptual framework for bringing systems perspectives into this field.
