Measuring Surface Tension and Free Surface Energy

22.1 Introduction

Having introduced the concept of surface tension and free surface energy, we will now turn to methods that allow us to determine these characteristic values. As it turns out, several straightforward and convenient methods allow measuring the surface tension of a liquid. However, measuring the free energy of a surface is inherently more difficult because it is not a property directly accessible to measurement. In most cases, free energies of surfaces are measured via the characteristic contact angles that certain liquids will show on these surfaces.
