We have all been there. You sit down in a quiet cozy restaurant, or recline your seat on a long transcontinental flight, just as a nearby baby starts to wail. Mom has tried to take a break by handing baby over to Dad, but it doesn’t take long for the squealing and the reaching for Mom to begin. Dad tries in earnest to calm the baby, stiffly and awkwardly bouncing it to no avail. Dad isn’t yet comfortable carrying his child, nor does he have any mastery of parenting at this stage, and his baby knows it; baby has gotten the message. Although the baby can’t speak, she or he can read Dad’s body language.
