Some years ago, I was late for a request for proposal (RFP) meeting at city hall and mistakenly attended a quarterly meeting for the staff and volunteers of a nonprofit organization serving the city’s homeless population. When I showed up at the door, the meeting was already in progress and someone — I don’t know why — ushered me to the front row of a presentation by a director of the organization. Three minutes into it I knew I was at the wrong meeting, but I was mesmerized by the stats and data points about homelessness so I stayed put. Besides, I was seated right up front and leaving would look disrespectful to the presenter, so I just pretended I belonged in the meeting.
I ended up staying for the entire meeting and in the process, I learned a lot about homelessness, got inspired by the work the group did, was dragged into posing for group photos, and finally managed to find an organizer to confess that I actually crashed the meeting.
