One of my favorite childhood memories is sitting at a dimly-lit dining table across from my older sister Anamay, enthralled by her stories of fairies and goblins and heroes from faraway places. Where I grew up in a southern province in the Philippines, we didn’t have TV or phones or even electricity. So a fun night for me was when an older family member would tell me stories, especially scary ones, around a kerosene lamp.

Looking back, I realize how little I appreciated the skill it took to be a good storyteller for a curious child like me. I remember one night, Anamay started with the Cinderella story but when we got to the end, I begged her to keep going because the story doesn’t just end with Cinderella and the Prince getting married, right? What happened after the wedding? Did they have kids? How many? Did the kids grow up and get married, too?
