Statistical Functions

Excel's statistical functions make it easy to perform complex statistical analyses. Here's a handful of the functions I think you'll use most.

Tips

  • Excel's AVERAGE function does not include empty cells when calculating the average for a range of cells.

  • Although the AVERAGE, MEDIAN, MODE, MIN and MAX functions can each accept up to 30 arguments separated by commas, only one argument is required.

  • You can use the AutoSum button's menu on the Standard toolbar (Figure 23) to enter a function using the AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX, and MIN functions.

The AVERAGE function

The AVERAGE function (Figure 48) calculates the average or mean of its arguments. It uses the following syntax:

AVERAGE(number1,number2,…)
