Client Compatibility and Selection

In addition to having multiple operating systems to choose from, you also have several choices for Exchange clients. Exchange clients can be broken down into four categories.

  1. MAPI clients: This includes Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, Microsoft Outlook 2002, and Microsoft Outlook 2000.

  2. Web-based clients: There are two types of clients for OWA, the Web-based clients for Exchange: Premium clients that run Internet Explorer 5.01 or later and Basic clients that run all other browsers.

  3. Mobile clients: This includes OMA clients, such as Pocket PC 2002, and Exchange Server ActiveSync clients.

  4. Internet protocol clients: This includes POP3, IMAP4, and NNTP clients, such as Microsoft Outlook Express.
