For many organizations, messaging services are mission-critical; a healthy flow of e-mail-based communication is needed so that knowledge workers can perform many of their tasks and business processes can be completed. If e-mail is unavailable, it's a huge nuisance and an interruption that can reduce productivity a little or a lot. For some organizations, e-mail is business-critical; if it is unavailable, the business suffers in the form of lost revenue and perhaps a loss of credibility or trustworthiness if the outage is due to a security breach.
