For many organizations, messaging services are mission-critical; a healthy flow of e-mail-based communication is needed so that knowledge workers can perform many of their tasks and business processes can be completed. If e-mail is unavailable, it's a huge nuisance and an interruption that can reduce productivity a little or a lot.
