Originally introduced in Exchange 2000 Server, the Recipient Update Service is an asynchronous service that completes the provisioning process each time you create a new Exchange user. The Recipient Update Service (RUS) in Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003 is made up of two parts. The first part of RUS is an API that determines which properties are necessary for a particular object. The second part of RUS is a subservice that runs in the Exchange System Attendant. This subservice looks for the recipients that are in need of updating and applies the API-calculated properties to the object. It is this second part of RUS that is of interest in a coexistence scenario.
