Discovery mailboxes

Discovery mailboxes are used as the repository for the metadata that drives discovery searches and the output that the searches generate from user mailboxes. We’ll discuss how searches are executed in Chapter 15. Discovery mailboxes cannot receive email. Two different discovery mailboxes are created by the Exchange 2010 installation procedure.

The first is the discovery metadata mailbox that holds information about completed and pending searches. You will not be able to perform discovery searches unless this mailbox is online and available. It has the fixed name “SystemMailbox{e0dc1c29-89c3-4034-b678-e6c29d823ed9}”. This mailbox is created as an arbitration mailbox and you can locate it with:
