Overview of the transport architecture
Exchange 2007 discarded the routing mechanism based on predefined routing groups and connectors used in Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003. Exchange Server 2010 routing is very similar to Exchange 2007 routing in that direct point-to-point connections between hub transport servers provide the essential foundation for message routing. If a hub transport server has a message addressed to a mailbox on another server, it attempts to make a direct IP connection to the hub transport server that is closest to its final destination to transfer the message.
