Certificate management
X.509 certificates are important to Exchange because they underpin the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)–based secure communications between clients and servers, including SMTP conversations (secured with Transport Layer Security [TLS]) to transfer email between servers. Certificates can also be used for federation between Exchange organizations. The certificates authenticate that their holders are who they claim to be and are used to create the secure channels that transfer data. Exchange 2013 supports three kinds of certificates:
