Exchange Journaling, Archiving, and Compliance

13.1 Introduction

In this chapter, I take a broad look at the nature of journaling, archiving, and compliance as it pertains to Exchange. The concepts are very different, but are often used interchangeably and, by implication, incorrectly.

To begin, I describe some of the broader requirements of data management that Exchange administrators should be cognizant of; then, I define some guiding principles for the implementation of a compliance solution and close with a detailed description of the journaling capability within Exchange up to Exchange 2003.
