Litigation Hold only allows you to place all items in a mailbox on hold, while in-place hold allows you to search and preserve messages matching query parameters. Both types of hold protect messages from permanent deletion, modification, and tampering and can preserve these indefinitely or for a specified period.

Litigation Hold uses the LitigationHoldEnabled property of a mailbox. When Litigation Hold is enabled, all mailbox items are placed on hold. In our example, we also used the LitigationHoldDuration parameter to specify that mailbox items should be held for 90 days (the duration is calculated from the date a mailbox item is received or created).
