Managed Availability consists of three key components: Probes, Monitors, and Responders. These work closely together to test, detect, and try to resolve possible problems. First, Managed Availability runs a probe. Depending on which probe is run (there are hundreds of different ones), it gathers information about, or executes a series of tests for, a specific component.
Then, a monitor evaluates the results of that probe and uses the gathered information to decide whether the component is healthy or unhealthy.
