Managing IIS Metabase Settings
The metabase is one of the most important components in an IIS installation. The metabase is where IIS stores configuration settings for sites and virtual servers. The metabase also contains default settings for sites and virtual servers, such as the global Web Sites properties.
Tip
When you work with the metabase files, it’s important to note that you shouldn’t use the Encrypting File System (EFS) to encrypt them. Sensitive values in the metabase are already encrypted, and if you encrypt the metabase files themselves, you’ll unnecessarily slow down IIS.
