Chapter 6. Smart Tags

Smart tags were introduced with Microsoft Office XP. A smart tag is an element of text (a string) in an Office document that is recognized as having custom actions associated with it. The list of elements recognized is determined by the business requirements and is completely open. For example, it might be a list of customer names, medical terms, product names or IDs, towns and cities, engineering acronyms, or financial instruments.

Smart tags enhance the power of Office with the ability to recognize the significance of a particular string and to respond with a list of possible actions.
