Glossary
Blog: A blog is a web log or online journal. A blog provides a forum for people to write communications that can be viewed across the entire organization or Internet. After a blog entry is posted, the content can be commented on and discussed on the blog entry page. Blogs are prevalent throughout modern society, and SharePoint provides the ability to get a blog up and running in a manner of minutes.
Cloud: A very broad marketing term and buzzword that refers to accessing software over the Internet.
Discussion Board: A discussion board allows for online discussion throughout the organization. A discussion board provides a forum for people to post questions and replies that can be viewed throughout the organization.
Excel Services: Excel Services is a feature of SharePoint that allows Excel documents to be surfaced through a SharePoint site and thus through a web browser.
Exchange: Exchange is Microsoft’s e-mail server designed to handle the heavy lifting of managing and routing e-mails. In addition, Exchange handles functionality, such as contacts, calendars, and tasks. Users generally use an e-mail client, such as Outlook to connect to Exchange.
Exchange Online: Exchange Online is the term for Microsoft’s cloud version of Exchange. The Online portion refers to the fact that you access your Exchange instance over the Internet while you are online. Microsoft installs Exchange on servers running in its data centers, and you connect to it and use it over the Internet.
