Using Subtotals to Analyze a List
Choose Data, Subtotals to apply aggregate formulas to groups of entries in a list. A typical application of the Subtotal command might be to add up sales by salesperson or customer, or expenses by payee or budget category. This command can do as its name suggests—add subtotal lines for each group of entries in a list. It also can supply other aggregate calculations at a group level. For example, you can use the Subtotals command to calculate the average of the values in a particular column for each group of rows, the number of rows in each group, the maximum or minimum value per group, the standard deviation for each group, and so on.
