Pre-upgrade Tasks
A number of pre-upgrade tasks need to be performed before you will be ready to upgrade your SharePoint Portal Server 2003 farm to SharePoint Server 2007. Many of these tasks focus primarily on educating you, the administrator, about the exact state of the farm. You can regard this education as a necessary phase that is similar to seeing your doctor for a physical examination.
