Organizing with Styles

Paragraph styles do more than quickly apply formatting to your paragraphs; they also assign an outline level to each paragraph in a document. Word uses these outline levels to understand the way you’re organizing the document—which paragraphs are headings, which are subheadings, and which are text. The outline level also affects the way Word creates a table of contents and the way it organizes the document in Outline view.

Set the Outline Level

  1. Start Word, and open your document if it isn’t already open.
