How to do it...

  1. Open the Power BI Desktop file containing the dataset to be documented. This file must remain open during data retrieval.
  2. Open DAX Studio and connect to the open Power BI Desktop file.
  3. Retrieve the server and database name associated with the running Power BI Desktop (PBIX) dataset.
The server name will be in the bottom right of the DAX Studio status bar such as localhost:57825. The following SQL statement will retrieve the system name of the database to be queried: Select [CATALOG_NAME] From $System.DBSCHEMA_CATALOGS In this example, 57825 represents the local port being used by the Power BI Desktop file and the following 36-character string is the catalog name: 59eb0067-25f9-4f07-a4e2-54d2188ebc43.
