A powerful feature of Microsoft SharePoint 2013 is the rich set of libraries and tools it offers to support development of client-side solutions. Before SharePoint 2010, the only out-of-the-box method to communicate between SharePoint and a consumer application was to use WebDAV or SharePoint ASMX web services. Both of these communication techniques were restrictive, however, and not terribly easy to use.
