Composites (Extending SharePoint)
Composites account for those solutions built on top of SharePoint Server 2010 such as solutions targeted at existing business processes or integrating data from backend or legacy systems into SharePoint sites. Several new features, which are summarized in the following sections, have been introduced to SharePoint Server 2010 to provide the necessary tools and support for building composites.
Business Connectivity Services (BCS)
Formerly known as the BDC in SharePoint Server 2007, BCS provides read and write access to backend systems, such as LOB systems, and provides the basis to connect to and work with external data within SharePoint.
