Page Layouts: Customized and Uncustomized States

Chapter 11, “Understanding SharePoint Designer Editing Features,” discussed the concept of customizing and uncustomizing content pages in SharePoint sites. The same concept applies to page layouts. However, customizing a page layout and then choosing to reset the page layout to its site definition file affects the user interface.

Generally, when you create a new page layout in SharePoint Designer, the page layout becomes customized when you save it and check it in.
