Creating Fixed-Width Master Pages
As I mentioned earlier in the chapter in discussing screen resolution, implementing a fixed-width master page makes it easier to control master page attributes such as the width and positioning of banners. Fixed-width master pages are popular on public-facing SharePoint 2010 sites because there is much more emphasis on controlling the appearance of banners and logos than on internal, team-based sites.
