Modifying Navigation in SharePoint Foundation 2010

A frequent question I receive is how to enable drop-down navigation in SharePoint Foundation 2010 sites. In SharePoint Server 2010 publishing sites, you can easily enable drop-down navigation by checking the Show Subsites checkbox on the site setting’s Navigation Settings page. However, in SharePoint Foundation 2010 you do not have the option of doing the same in the Web interface. In addition, when you modify the top-level navigation’s MaximumDynamicDisplayLevels value in SharePoint Designer, you see no effect. In order to achieve drop-down navigation in SharePoint Foundation 2010 sites, there are a couple of additional modifications you need to make to the <asp:SiteMapDataSource> control.
